For the University of Georgia’s opening game, my sister-in-law hosted the family at her house. I volunteered to bring dessert, and it quickly turned into a UGA football dessert table, decked out in our team’s red and black.
I started with this terrific black and white print — just $10 for a two-yard remnant. (Gotta love Old Time Pottery! You never know what you’re going to find, and the fabric bin is always my first stop.) I added $9 of red ball fringe to create this table runner. (I’m planning to change out the ball fringe to orange for Halloween.)
Next up was a banner, just because I’d never made one and wanted to know if I could quickly and inexpensively create a no-sew banner. Yes and yes!
The banner success (and the scraps calling my name) led to the mini banner around my cake stand.
Onto the sweets! A cake was a must and I thought this chocolate-chocolate football cake turned out cute — love the grass detail.
Cake Pops by Jen made the vanilla and buttercream cake pops, red with black drizzle. So pretty!
Candy included cherry licorice, ribbon candy, raspberry & blackberry candy, Swedish fish, cherry sours, and a black and white licorice mix. Both the apothecary jars and the votive candle holders used as candy dishes featured football ribbon and tags in a collegiate font.
To the candy, I added brownie bites and candy dipped pretzels, sprinkled with black sugar.
Drinks included Coke and Diet Coke (the only real choice here in Georgia, headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company) and football bottles for the kids’ drinks. Oh how I love these!
Once I saw these little red tins with the clear tops, I knew I had to have them for favors — red and black Jelly Bellies — labeled with each guest’s name. Meg and Grace kept asking, “Will there be some for us?” which made me smile because did they really think I was going to set out all that candy and forbid them to have any?
Go Dawgs!

Where did you find that Bulldog statue?
Hi Lauren – I wish I had a good answer for you. My husband has had the little statue for years. I think it came from Rich’s/Macy’s. Good luck!
