I used a burlap banner from WhiteHouseBlackCat that I loved in my Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Party. Ever since, I’ve wanted to try making my own. I thought I couldn’t because I don’t sew, but once again, Aleene’s Thick Tacky Glue came to the rescue. This is a fun project to do with the kids and I’d encourage you to give it a try. How fun would this painted banner banner be for a surf or mermaid party?

I have a little fascination with burlap right now. (If you need a lot of burlap, try http://burlapfabric.com. They are one of our newest sponsors and have great prices!)

My project was made easier because I have a Silhouette machine, but here is a great tutorial for creating a banner without a die cutting machine.

Painted Burlap Banner Supplies

  • Burlap (Try http://burlapfabric.com for the burlap and hemp cord or jute.)
  • Hemp cord
  • Acrylic paint
  • Textile medium
  • Pouncer
  • Blue painter’s tape
  • Paper for template
  • Aleene’s Thick Tacky Glue
  • Cardstock for letter stencils
  • Silhouette machine
  • Glue dots
  • Scissors

Painted Burlap Banner Instructions

1. Cut out your letters using a die cutting machine. You also could print these out and free-hand cut them using an Exacto knife.

2. Place your letter stencils on the paper that will form your flag template. This will give you an idea of what size to make the flag template. When you cut out your flag template, allow 1 inch at the top to fold over the twine.

3. Using your flag template, cut out the flags for your banner.

4. Using the blue painter’s tape, attach one letter to each flag. (For the little bits, you might want to use a re-positionable pop-up glue dot.

5. To attach the interior parts of your letters, I used a glue dot.

6. Mix your paint and textile medium according to package directions. My paint color was Patina by Folk Art.

7. Dip your pouncer into the paint/textile medium mixture, then dab some of it off. Tap the pouncer onto the burlap with a straight up and down motion.

8. Allow paint to dry for about an hour and then carefully remove the tape and stencil.

9. Run two lines of glue at the top of your banner on the reverse side. Lay the cord on the lower line of glue.

10. Fold over the top of the banner so the top line of glue is now just below the cord. Press tightly into place.

11. Continue arranging your flags in order about 1.5 inches apart.
