Did you have a favorite Halloween costume as a child? Mine was a witch costume, sewn by my mom. One of my twin girls feels the same way, and has dressed up as a witch for Halloween three times. (I have no sewing skills, but I can shop with the best of them.) Those are the memories that inspired my Witch’s Tea Party.

Witch's Tea Party by The Party Teacher

I planned this party at the last minute, condensing the steps in my Week-by-Week Party Planning Guide. (Get yours free here!) The girls invited friends, everyone changed into witchy attire, and we had a Halloween-style afternoon tea party.

It’s not too late for you to host a Witch’s Tea Party of your own! Just keep the sweets simple, and start ordering your supplies ASAP! Do a little crafting each night, and you’ll be ready in no time.

I know tying pretty bows was something that always used to befuddle me. I figured that if I could tie my shoe laces, I should be able to tie a bow, right? But they always came out kind of twisty and uneven. This technique makes it so much easier to get a prefect bow every time. Will you try it?

Witch’s Tea Party Printables

I went searching for black and white, elegant witch printables and of course, Love the Day had just what I needed. I used food labels, party circles, favor tags, and banner letters. Try dressing up your banner letters with pleated crepe paper – it goes much faster than you’d think.

Witch’s Tea Party Backdrop

The backdrop is just a set of sheer black curtain panels, hung on a tension rod. To that I added a laser-cut wood frame from Michael’s. Paint the frame white, back it with a piece of black 12” x 12” scrapbooking paper, and add a white witch silhouette. (I used my Silhouette Cameo.) Hang the frame with a 3M Command Strip.

Witch’s Tea Party Dessert Table

Our desserts were chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (crone cakes) with witch hat fondant toppers, caldron cakepops, “eye of newt” gumballs, and one homemade item: witch’s stockings. (Here’s the recipe.) Of course, we served green “witch’s brew” instead of tea.

To fill in the dessert table (it doesn’t have to be all sweets!), I used:

  • Two candlesticks topped with white faux pumpkins, tied with black and white striped ribbon
  • Black cat with the same ribbon
  • Black glitter broom

Witch’s Tea Party Table Settings

To coordinate the dinning table with the dessert table, I used another white tablecloth. Each place setting has these layers:

  • Black doily as a placemat
  • My white ironstone dinner plate, saucer and tea cup
  • Black rock candy across each tea cup
  • Dessert plate with Love the Day cling from Create UR Plate – a great way to customize plates for any party
  • White napkin with home-made napkin ring (black and white ribbon with witch hat button)
  • Wood fork topped with a black glitter spider

My favorite touch for this party is the witch shoe place cards. My girls and I just painted these black and then had the best time picking out witch names. I cut out the names with my Silhouette Cameo and glued them on with Aleene’s Thick Tacky Glue. (Get more witch name ideas here.)

Witch’s Tea Party Centerpiece

For the centerpiece, I re-created the idea from my Vintage Tea Party Plan (an e-book that plans an entire tea party birthday for you). It’s all about layering (again!): top a silver tray with older books, and then a teapot with flowers. This time, I used faux black roses. (Here’s the tutorial; you don’t need any floral arranging skills.) I added more flowering teapots on either side.

Witch’s Tea Party Chair Decorations

I love to dress up my party chairs. It’s just one more surface to decorate! Make bows with your ribbon and add floral wire to the back. (Here’s how to make the perfect bow.) Then swag a black feather boa along your chair back and twist tie the bows on either side to hold the boa in place.

Witch’s Tea Party Favors

I say it’s not a party unless you’re recycling something. This time, it was DollarTree mini composition books from my Junie B. Jones Party. I covered them with parchment paper and a Love the Day “spell book” circle. (She how to make them here.) The spell books and tree branch pencils left over from Christmas went into a kraft paper bag, tied with one of Lindi’s thank you tags.

Witch’s Tea Party Games

We wound up with a rainy day for our tea party, so the girls stayed inside and had fun dressing up, posing, and munching on all our sweets. With a better day, here are some activity ideas that will get your little witches up from the table and playing:

  • Decorate a broom (you can find brooms at the dollar store)
  • Decorate a witch’s hat or fascinator (you can find kits at Michael’s)
  • Broom races
  • Paint fingernails green or black
  • Witch hat ring toss
  • Cackling contest
  • Bob for apples from caldron
  • Decorate or carve (with supervision) pumpkins
  • Play “pin the face on the pumpkin”
  • Pin the tail on the flying monkey / pin the tail on the black cat
  • Good witch / wicked witch freeze tag
  • Witch’s spell scavenger hunt
