Tutorial: How to decorate rustic birthday party letters

We throw joint birthday parties for our twin girls, so since they have to share a party, I always try to find a way to make the party personal for each of them. For their 12th birthday Horseback Riding Party, I decorated rustic birthday party letters for each of them. This was an easy project (aside from a glue gun burn…) and I’m showing you how in this tutorial.

Rustic Birthday Letter Supplies

• Oversized home decor letters – my letters were 14-inch high and from Hobby Lobby
• Hot glue gun
• Silk flowers and leaves – two large flowers and one small flower for each letter
• Wire cutters
• Jute twine

Rustic Birthday Letter Instructions

1 – With the wire cutters, cut the stems off at the base of the flowers.

2 – Now you’re going to wrap the jute twine around the letters so it lays flat and is about 1.5 inches wide. Leave a few inches of twine loose before you start wrapping. Secure the beginning of the wrap with a dot of hot glue on the back of the letter. Leave a few inches of twine loose at end of the wrap, then knot the two loose ends.

3 – Hot glue the two large flowers on the front side of the wrapped twine.

4 – Tuck a group of leaves under one side of the flowers and hot glue it in place.

5 – On the other side of the flowers, hot glue the small flower into place.

And that’s it. Shopping for supplies will take longer than actually decorating the letters.

You could use the letters as a party backdrop. (Mine had hangers on the back.) Since I didn’t have a backdrop, I just leaned them against the dessert table.

Now that the party’s over, the girls are using them to decorate their bedrooms.
