Well, the tornado won the Facebook poll of which Wizard of Oz party tutorial you wanted to see on the blog. This project is easy, quick and the kids can help. Here’s how to make a Wizard of Oz tornado centerpiece for your party!
Tornado Centerpiece Supplies
- Grapevine cornucopia
- White spider webbing
- Gray creepy cloth
- Black grosgrain ribbon, quarter inch width
I found my webbing at Dollar Tree well before Halloween — just a dollar for each pack. The cornucopia can be found at a craft store. With a 40% off coupon, expect to pay about $12. When your ribbon is on sale, it should only be about $2. That puts your total project cost at about $16.
Tornado Centerpiece Instructions
1. Start with the gray webbing. Tuck it into the pointy end of the cornucopia.
2. Wrap a thin layer of the gray webbing up and around the cornucopia.
3. Repeat the same process with the white webbing. Tuck it into the point, and then wrap a thin layer up the cornucopia. The white webbing can be stretched and thinned out. So, as you wrap the webbing, thin out some areas so the gray webbing shows through. Let some of the brown vines show through as well — it will look like tornado debris.
4. At the top of the cornucopia, trim your webbing, leaving about 3 inches of each type to tuck into the open top. The vines will “catch” the webbing and hold it in place — no glue needed.
5. Measure how much ribbon you’ll need to hang your tornado, allowing extra for tying the bow. Slide the ribbon through the vines at the mouth of the cornucopia, then tie the ribbon to your light fixture.
And here’s the finished product, hanging from our chandelier, suspended above Dorothy’s house. (I really wanted to buy doll house accessories … a rocking chair, fishing rod, bicycle, and cow … to represent the things Dorothy saw flying through the tornado, but I restrained myself.)
That is a FABULOUS idea! Very, very fun!
