You never know when inspiration will hit. So as you read this, picture me supervising bath time, and sketching Halloween ideas on our grocery list pad. I decided this year to go for a modern backdrop for Halloween that would allow me to change out decorations and try out loads of ideas for you. Today, I’ll show you how to create a Halloween canvas with a mini bunting.

All of these ideas are easy and inexpensive – my favorite kind! They are all based on a painted canvas backdrop. Come back all this week for different takes on this canvas.

I think this also could make a great dessert table backdrop, and of course, you could repaint it as many times as you like.

Halloween Canvas Mini Bunting Supplies

  • 36” x 36” canvas (Watch for this to go on sale at your local craft store.)
  • Orange acrylic paint
  • Small foam paint roller
  • 2-3 sheets of 12” x 12” scrapbooking paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • ½” satin ribbon
  • Hole punch
  • Glue dots

Halloween Canvas Mini Bunting Instructions

1 – Start with 36” x 36” canvas. I didn’t prep it – just started painting.

2 – This project took about half a bottle of 8 oz. paint.

3 – Load your roller with paint and then roll it on your paint tray until the paint is evenly dispersed. (I used a paper plate instead of a paint tray.)

4 – Apply three thin coats of paint to the canvas, including the sides, being sure to blend well. Allow to dry about 30 minutes between coats.

5 – In between coats, wrap your roller in Glad wrap so it doesn’t dry out.

6 – On the blank side of your scrapbook paper, mark every three inches and draw a grid. You should end up with 16 boxes.

7 – On the bottom line of each box, make a mark at the 1.5” mark.

8 – Draw guidelines from the center mark at 1.5” to the left and right corners of the box.

9 – I clipped my sheets together and then followed the guidelines to cut our my triangles from multiple sheets at one time. (Could you use a Silhouette die cutting machine for this? Sure. The only reason I didn’t was that my blade broke.)

10 – Punch holes in the upper corners of the triangles.

11 – Cut 5” lengths of ribbon. Carefully thread the ribbon through the holes and tie each triangle together. Trim your ribbon.

Here are some more shots of our mantle. I just added some foam pumpkins in various sizes and shapes, and I was done.
