Welcome to the third tutorial for my Zombie Princess Party! Don’t miss the super-easy how-tos for the zombie soda bottles and Princess Creepy Teeth, our dining table centerpiece. Today, I’m showing you how to make bloody handprint napkins. (Think “bloody” in air quotes.) Do zombies technically bleed? I’ll admit: I didn’t do a lot — well, any — research into zombie lore before creating my party. So in my world, zombies bleed. Zombie experts, please be kind.
Bloody Handprint Napkin Supplies
- Fabric napkins (polyester is fine — try Tablecloth Factory or Linen Tablecloth)
- Red fabric paint or red acrylic paint + fabric medium
- Foam brush
Bloody Handprint Napkin Instructions
1 – Pre-wash your napkins. It will help them take the paint. (Okay, this is not a photo of me washing napkins. My laundry room is really not that exciting.)
2 – If you are mixing paint and textile medium, just follow the instructions on the textile medium bottle.
3 – Paint your kiddo’s palm bright red.
4 – Plop that palm on one corner of your napkin and gently and evenly press down.
5 – Help your child lift her hand cleanly off the napkin.
6 – This part would work better if you can do it outside, which I couldn’t the day I made the napkins. Take your brush, dip it in a generous amount of paint, and alternately drip and splatter it on your napkin.
7 – If you are working outside and can really fling your paint in a creepy, blood-spatter way, awesome. If not, do what I did and plop your fingers in your paint blobs and drag down the napkin to create a bloody smear.
And that’s probably the grossest-sounding party tutorial I’ve ever written! (Except did you see the one about the rats?)
Here are the napkins on my party table. I tied them in faux pearl necklaces since this was a princess zombie party. I can’t say that my party guests ever make much use of their napkins, but this time we had a soda spill, so at least one actually got used. Small victories!
What a great way to get the kids involved in decorating.
This is such a fun idea! Will definitely do this next year!
