For my Valentine’s Classroom Party, I wanted to think of a low-cost way for the kids to decorate Valentine’s Day card boxes. While there are cute options in the craft stores, and you could certainly go the brown paper bag route, I really wanted a Valentine’s box that would be affordable for every child.

Class moms (or dads) would only need to ask each child to bring in a tissue box and (optionally) any craft supplies they have to share. I pulled all our craft supplies from my stash, and it didn’t take much.

Valentine’s Card Box Supplies

  • Tissue box – any size will do
  • Valentine’s scrapbooking paper (or the teacher’s construction paper)
  • Duck Tape
  • Washi tape
  • Heart stickers
  • Markers
  • Scotch tape
  • Scissors

I think it always helps kids to have a sample for inspiration, so I made one box for our party, and then my girls each made their own boxes.

Valentine’s Card Box Instructions

1 – Place your Duck Tape over either side of the tissue box opening. (Remember, it’s always easier to slice the Duck Tape from the non-sticky side than it is to cut the Duck Tape and gunk up you scissors.) Since the Duck Tape is so sticky, it’s easy to miter the corners.

2 – Make small slits in the Duck Tape that lies over the open area so you can wrap it under the opening. You are trying to strengthen this opening that will get wear and tear from taking the cards in and out of the box.

3 – Trim 12″ x 12″ scrapbooking paper into strips that can wrap around your tissue box. Use the Scotch tape to hold the paper in place. You may want to tape the paper to the top and bottom of the box also, so the paper is less likely to catch on something and rip.

4 – Now that you have the Duck Tape and paper base, decorate your box any way you like. I added a center strip of Duck Tape, then added my daughter’s name and heart stickers.

Both my girls are so wild about Duck Tape that they both made all Duck Tape boxes.
