3 Ways to Style a Vase in Vase Party Centerpiece

The fun thing about designing centerpieces for a children’s party is that because you’re designing for kids, the centerpiece can be just about anything. But if you choose flowers, you can still create a fun little surprise by doubling up your vases. Here are three ways to style a vase in a vase party centerpiece.

The short version is: pick two vases. One has to fit inside the other without being any taller than the outside vase. The flowers go in the inside vase. You can fill the space between the vases with scrapbooking paper, or candy, or greenery or whatever fits your party theme. You’ve probably seen versions of this idea with carrots or Peeps for an Easter centerpiece.

Vase in Vase Centerpiece Supplies

• Large glass cylinder vase (diameter 7″ x height 7″)
• Medium glass cylinder vase (diameter 5″ x height 6″)
• 2 pounds of Sixlets or other candy
• Wrapping paper of your choice
• Greenery of your choice or faux leaves like these

Wrapping Paper Version

1 – Start by holding your wrapping paper inside the outer vase to see the height you need to cut. Cut the paper a little taller than the height of the vase (about an inch taller).

2 – Wrap the paper around the outside of the vase so eyeball the length of paper you need to cut.

3 – I can’t cut straight, but I wanted neat edges, so I folded my paper down to the correct height and length. It worked best for the height of the paper to be a little shorter than the lip of vase.

4 – Make a grid of Scotch tape on top of the smaller vase. This will help hold your flowers in the correct position. Slip the wrapping paper inside the larger vase. Now, insert the smaller vase inside the wrapping paper. You’ll build your flower arrangement with the two vases already “assembled.”

5 – I found it easiest to create my flower arrangement from the center out — a little bit of a reverse for how I normally work. Hold the flowers in place until you have enough within your tape grid to hold the shape themselves. (Also: don’t actually use lilies in an arrangement that will be on a dining table — the scent can be overwhelming.)

CANDY VERSION

For the candy version, the main thing is to choose candy that will fit in between the vases. Sixlets worked perfectly. It took 2 pounds of Sixlets to fill the space.

1 – This photo shows me filling in the Sixlets after my flowers were in place, but that’s just because I didn’t want to disturb the arrangement I made for the wrapping paper version. You should still follow the steps above and add the candy to the vase BEFORE arranging your flowers.

2 – But as you can see, all you do is pour in the Sixlets. Rotate the vase as you pour in the candy so the vase fills evenly. Couldn’t be easier!

Greenery Version

The flowers I bought came with these narrow, spikey palm fronds. (At least I think that’s what they are!) I think this idea would look a little tidier with larger leaves. But use what you have, right?

1 – Layer the palm fronds in your hand so each one overlaps the next.

2 – Place the greenery in the vase, making sure it covers the vase from bottom to top. I had to add the greenery before adding the smaller interior vase.

And here’s the finished version. The greenery didn’t lay as neatly as I’d like, but it wasn’t bad for a non-professional first attempt! Don’t be afraid to try things for your party. Just give yourself enough time before the party to experiment if you don’t like how your attempt turned out.
