My girls were just home for spring break, so I declared it early St. Patrick’s Day! I’ve always done a little something for them on St. Patrick’s Day, even if it was just making breakfast green. This year, I started thinking about a leprechaun hat that I got at Walmart ages ago and what I might be able to do with it as a centerpiece. You’ll see that our St. Patrick’s Day tablescape turned out completely differently from that initial idea, but I had fun planning our little celebration with the girls — and that’s all I really care about.

How to Brainstorm ideas for your St. Patrick’s Day tablescape

I started by brainstorming everything that I associate with St. Patrick’s Day:
- The colors of the Irish flag (green, white and orange)
- Leprechauns with their hats and buckles
- A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
- Shamrocks and Bells of Ireland
I also quickly checked Wikipedia for St. Patrick’s Day and leprechauns. That reminded me of:
- Little black cauldrons
- Driving the snakes out of Ireland
- Leprechaun traps

With those colors and motifs in mind, it was really pretty easy to think about:
- What could I pull from my house?
- What can I find that would be quickly delivered from Amazon?
- And what could I pick up locally?
Always shop at home first: if you invest in solid color, reusable party elements like placemats or melamine dishes, you’ll find that you can use them for party after party.
We decided to make just a pretty St. Patrick’s Day tablescape with some festive desserts.

I love to add a little chair decoration at my parties and my favorite trick is to tie a 1.5 inch wide satin ribbon to the corner of each chair back. It’s just a little detail, but I feel like it adds to the festivity.

Simple DIY St. Patrick’s Day Desserts
Our cake was definitely not DIY: Publix has two cute mini cakes for St. Patrick’s Day. One is a pot of gold and the other is a leprechaun hat, which I chose. Each cake is just $16. We displayed our desserts on simple black cake stands. To give the leprechaun hat cake a little more presence — since it was doubling as our centerpiece — I set it on a gold tray and tied a green ribbon bow around the pedestal.

I found jumbo gummy snakes on Amazon, and Baby B arranged them around the gold tray. I think they’re hysterical! She also arranged some gold shamrock coins that we’ve had forever around three cake stands. The coins created a sort of table runner that grounded the desserts a little more.

Rainbow-topped cupcakes
I picked up chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and Airheads rainbow belts to use as cupcake toppers. I also found a silicone mold of mini mustaches. If you’ve never tried molding your own candy melts, it could not be any simpler!
- Melt the candy melts either in your microwave or using a Wilton candy melting pot.
- Spoon the candy into your mold.
- Scrape off any excess candy so it sits flat in the mold.
- Let it set up, and pop it in the fridge for a few minutes.
- Then just wiggle the candy out of your mold.

I’m sure you’ve seen the Airheads rainbow belts as cupcake rainbows before, so this is not a new idea, but it is very easy to execute.
- Take a rainbow belt and cut it in half.
- Use a kitchen knife to make two small slits in your cupcake frosting.
- Bend the belt into an arch and insert either end into the slits in your frosting.
- In front of each rainbow belt, I added a little candy mustache.

St. Patrick’s Day Flower Arrangements
To finish off the center of the table, I created two loose floral arrangements. I chose orange roses, smaller spray roses also in orange, and green and white pompom buttons.
- I didn’t pick up any greenery, so I cut the green and white stems short to provide a base around the edges of the vases.
- Then I just alternated the larger and smaller orange roses in the rest of the vase.
- If you wanted a fuller look, you could fill in with baby’s breathe or chamomile.

Pretty Place Settings
Our place settings started with some round woven placemats in spring green that I first bought for the girls’ flower fairy party. I topped those with my white ironstone dinner plates and then this cutie patootie set of shamrock plates that I found on Amazon. There’s a green melamine lunch-size plate and a ceramic green trinket plate. And I couldn’t resist some white napkins with green shamrocks. Those were just tied with a simple knot and paired with a gold fork.

For drinks, we went with orange soda, and I wrapped the bottles with light green duct tape, just to continue playing on our green and orange color scheme.

Free Printable Coloring Page for Little Ones
Finally, my crew did not need a coloring page, but if you’ve got little kids, I thought they might enjoy this. I created a free printable of the Irish flag. It also has a little sample of how the colors are arranged on the flag, plus the color words. You could just color the flag, or have the kids cut it out and then glue the flag pole to a wood dowel or popsicle stick so that each child can create their own Irish flag.

And here’s the leprechaun hat, tucked on our sideboard with a couple of framed St. Patrick’s Day signs I pull out annually. I made a mini ribbon bunting and hung that from the drawer handles.

And that’s it! You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time to create a little holiday celebration for your family. I hope these ideas spark creativity of your own and reinforce the idea that nothing you do has to reach some impossible level of perfection. And I hope whatever you do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, you get to do that with your kids!
