Being invited to a party is wonderful — it means someone wants to share their special occasion with you! While bringing a bottle of wine or flowers is always appreciated, here are some more creative ways to thank your host for their hospitality. Because nothing says, “I know a party is a big effort. Thank you for including me!” like a thoughtful hostess gift.

Should you take a hostess gift to a party?
It depends on the type of party. If the party is for an event where you might bring a gift, you don’t need to take a hostess gift. So that’s a NO for:
- Graduation parties
- Bridal showers
- Gender reveal parties
- Baby showers
- Birthday parties
You also don’t need to take a hostess gift to reoccurring parties. So, if you have a monthly bunco night with the neighbors or a regular girls’ crafting night, you don’t need to bring a gift.
And of course, you don’t need to bring a gift to a potluck. (But, if the host is a close friend, it’s always kind to offer to pick up anything last-minute, like ice, or something she may have forgotten.)

But do take a hostess gift for “just-because” parties. So that’s a YES for:
- Open house
- House warming
- Christmas drop-in
- Dinner party
- Cocktail party
- A one-time girls’ night in (unless it’s a Favorite Things party)
For any of these types of events, you also can always send a small gift or flowers afterwards.
And if you’re attending anything black tie, do not bring a hostess gift.
How much should you spend on a hostess gift?
A hostess gift (or host gift) is not a full blown gift — it’s a token of appreciation. You don’t need to spend more than $20 or $30 on the gift. And of course something made in your kitchen with a sweet note would be just as appropriate.
A Note About Wine and Flowers
When bringing wine or flowers to a party, remember that your host has likely already planned their beverage menu and table decorations. The host will have selected a wine to pair with their menu, and already decorated for the event.
Don’t expect your gifted wine to be served that evening or your flowers to be displayed during the party. These gifts are meant to be enjoyed after the event, and that’s completely appropriate!
If you do bring flowers, which are a classic choice, bring them already arranged in a small vase. That way, your host doesn’t have to pause party prep to find a vase.

For the Book Lover
A thoughtfully chosen book can become a treasured gift that sparks joy long after the party ends. Consider a beautiful coffee table book that aligns with your host’s interests — maybe one about travel, architecture, or cuisine.

For those who love to document their thoughts, a high-quality journal with a handcrafted cover or an elegant pen can be incredibly special. Add a personal touch by including a note sharing why you chose this particular journal for them.

For the Entertaining Enthusiast
A beautifully curated cheese board paired with local honey or artisanal jam is thoughtful and can be enjoyed later. Include small wooden markers for labeling different cheeses, and your host will think of you every time they use them.
I also love fun cocktail and guest napkins. Pick up napkins that reflect your hostess’s style and include a pretty napkin holder.

For the Home Chef
A set of infused olive oils or specialty vinegars is a special treat any kitchen. Package them with crackers or handwritten recipe cards featuring your favorite ways to use each variety. This personal touch transforms a simple gift into something memorable.

For the Home Decorator
A beautifully crafted picture frame is a wonderful gift for the host who loves displaying memories. Choose a frame that complements your host’s home decor: would she like metallic finishes, minimal designs, or elegant wood tones? It’s perfect for friends who enjoy curating their personal spaces or have recently celebrated a milestone.

For the Cocktail Enthusiast
A stylish cocktail recipe book paired with a unique cocktail mix is perfect for the home bartender. Look for books with fun photography, and complement it with a small-batch mixer. This gift speaks to hosts who love entertaining and experimenting with new drink creations.

For the Tabletop Stylist
Pretty taper candles make a thoughtful hostess gift for those who love setting a beautiful table. Choose unexpected colors or shapes or metallic finishes that add a touch of elegance. They’re ideal for friends who appreciate subtle sophistication and enjoy creating memorable dining parties.

For the Organized Entertainer
A trinkets tray is a fantastic gift for hosts who appreciate both style and function. Select one with interesting textures or unique design — think marble, leather, or ceramic with metallic accents. Perfect for catching keys, storing small jewelry, or organizing cocktail party essentials.

For the Coffee or Tea Lover
Create a cozy morning-after kit with premium coffee beans or loose-leaf tea varieties, paired with a striking mug. Add local breakfast pastries for an extra thoughtful touch that your host will appreciate the morning following their celebration.
Or, bring your favorite homemade coffee cake plus the recipe. Be sure to use a sturdy but disposable or thrifted plate that you don’t need back. Wrap your gift in a tea towel.

For the Garden Enthusiast
Instead of traditional cut flowers, consider bringing a few potted herbs or a small succulent arrangement. These lasting gifts bring life to any space and can be enjoyed long after the party ends. I try to keep fresh basil on my windowsill and think it would be a great hostess gift in a sweet pottery planter like this one that I found at a local antique store.

For the Self-Care Devotee
Craft a relaxation bundle with luxurious bath salts and a bath bomb. Or choose a mild scented candle, or a beautiful box of chocolates from a local shop. This thoughtful combination gives your host something to look forward to after the festivities wind down.

For Someone You Don’t Know Well
If this is your first time meeting the host, go for something a little more generic, like a candle and attractive matches. The hostess will appreciate the gesture, and can always regift the item if it isn’t to her taste.

Making It Special
Whatever gift you choose, presentation matters! Consider these simple touches:
- Write a short but heartfelt note expressing your gratitude.
- Dress up the gift with a simple ribbon so the host doesn’t have to fuss with unwrapping a gift.
- Include care instructions for plants or specialty items.
- Choose a seasonal touch that complements the occasion.
Remember, the most meaningful hostess gifts show that you’ve considered your host’s interests and tastes. These thoughtful gestures not only express your appreciation but also create lasting memories of your friendship.
