Chocolate covered Oreos look like something you’d order from your favorite Etsy seller. They’re also shockingly easy to make at home. Baby B and I made our first batch for our back to school party. I used the same method to make chocolate covered googly eye Oreos for my Halloween dessert table. Bonus: they’d be just as cute at a little monsters birthday party or a Monsters Inc party.

How to make chocolate covered Oreos - The Party Teacher

This whole process takes about 30 or 40 minutes for a dozen Oreos, from melting the chocolate to adding the Oreos to the mold, to refrigerator time, to adding the mini Oreos.

Chocolate Covered Oreo Instructions

1 – Melt candy according to package directions in the microwave or on the stovetop. Or use the Wilton candy melting pot, like I do. I’ve tried it the other ways, and this is so much easier because it keeps your melted candy warm and perfect to dip with. The other ways, you have to keep re-warming and the consistency is harder to get right. The melting pot is also simple to clean because the dried candy pops out.

Here are three tips for melting candy wafers:

  • Stir with a heavy-duty disposable plastic spoon. It’s easier than cleaning the hardened chocolate off your silverware
  • Stir occasionally until the chocolate is mostly melted. Then stir constantly until the chocolate is glossy and runs off your spoon.
  • When it’s time to clean up, pour any excess melt into a plastic grocery bag to dispose of it. Scrape down the rest of with a silicone spatula. Do not pour candy melt down your disposal.

2 – Fill each mold with a scoop of melted candy. The scoop helps you keep the amount of candy even in each mold.

3 – Add an Oreo to each mold and press down slightly. You want some of the melted candy to come up on the sides of the cookie.

4 – Top each Oreo with another scoop of candy melt. Give the candy a minute to settle in the mold. You can also lift up the mold, then tap it down to remove air bubbles and make sure the cookies are evenly coated. (This is easier to do if the mold is sitting on a cookie sheet because the mold is extremely flexible. Ask me how I know.)

5 – If a mold has excess candy melt, scrape that off with the offset spatula or the back of a dinner knife.

6 – Let the cookies set up in the fridge for 15 minutes. In the meantime, twist several mini Oreos open and scrape off the filling with the spatula or knife. You need one mini cookie for each chocolate covered cookie.

7 – Pull the Oreos out of the fridge. Push each cookie out of the mold from the bottom. Flip each cookie over. The side that was in the bottom of the mold will be the top of the cookie — nice and smooth with crisp edges. You should be able to gently scrape off any excess candy from the new bottom of each cookie (the side that was face-up in the mold).

8 – Apply a dab of cookie icing to the inside of a mini cookie, then stick it to the top of the chocolate-covered Oreo. Now you have your googly eye Halloween Oreos!

If you have any left over after your party (doubtful) they will last for two weeks in a sealed container on your countertop. You don’t need to refrigerate them.

These googly eye cookies were fun to make and now that I have the silicone molds, I can make chocolate covered Oreos for any party. And in fact, my husband has already announced “we” should make these again!
