Today, I’m excited to welcome Roxana from Sugar-Sugar Cakes in Canton, GA. Roxana is one of my blog’s lovely sponsors, and you’ve seen her work before in my parties, most recently the microphone cake pops from my girls’ Country Music Awards Karaoke Party. Roxana created this dessert table for a Great Gatsby-themed rehearsal dinner at The Corner District, in Ball Ground, GA — a fabulous new Speakeasy type venue that lends itself to both very glam and very rustic events.
Roxana’s design for this Great Gatsby dessert table is so beautiful! I love all the little lux touches.
You know I believe that inspiration is all around. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking at a dessert table for an adult event but planning a child’s birthday party. Just look at those pearls that Roxana draped across the dessert table: how wonderful would that same detail be at a princess or dress up party?
Great Gatsby Party Backdrop
Roxana actually designed and constructed the backdrop and of course all the desserts on the table. I always advise my Custom Party Plan clients who may be styling their first dessert table to try a symmetrical arrangement and to remember to add tall items in the back for interest. Roxana’s table is a great example of those principles.
Sugar-Sugar Cakes specializes in traditional wedding cakes, but she also does so much more — just about any kind of dessert plus styling. Roxana’s is a full-service wedding and dessert styling business, and she does showers, engagement parties, birthdays, and corporate events throughout the Atlanta Metro Area. She will conceptualize and create dessert tables from the bottom up, including backdrops, props, furniture and everything in between. Her dessert tables really become a focal point of your party — in addition to being delicious!
Great Gatsby Party Desserts
The Great Gatsby Party desserts included:
- Large and mini champagne and strawberry cupcakes with a white chocolate buttercream.
- Chocolate cupcakes with a dulce de leche buttercream. The large cupcakes featured a fondant shell “marquee” resembling the backdrop.
- Mini key lime cheesecakes topped with fresh strawberries and a chocolate feather.
- Gem pops were vanilla with a super glam bling stick and fondant flowers — these are so gorgeous!
- Chocolate dipped sandwich cookies were dressed up in platinum and adorned with fondant flowers.
- An apothecary jar was filled to the brim with crispy french meringue cookies.
I’m so excited to see the full scope of Roxana’s work. She’s one of my new favorite dessert gals, but it’s so impressive to see what she’s cooking up when the design is all her!
Keep up with Roxana

Hi! I love the backdrop that Roxana made! is there anyway in getting instructions on how to make the back drop?
Ditto! I love that larger than life backdrop! I want to make it for a dinner party that I am doing Gatsby inspired and it is just perfect! Unfortunately I have waited too long to ask as the party is this Saturday but a tutorial would be amazing!
Good news all! I asked Roxana to write up a tutorial and she’ll work on it after her vacation. Be sure to check back for the details!
I would love to get a tutorial on this as I am hosting a 40th surprise birthday party for my sister in Rome Italy and need to pull this off myself in a short period of time when I get there. Can you please advise when the tutorial will be?
Yay awesome!! my wedding is in September so hopefully I get a chance to make it before then!
Any update on the tutorial for the backdrop?
I would love to make this for my 30th bday coming up in 2 weeks.
thanks
I’m excited for tutorial too. I purchased giant foam board (to do a low cost version) this afternoon and just started to cut. Would love to know dimensions, and a bit more about how it’s held up. I’m creating a backdrop for activity at school fundraiser. Thanks.
Hi Jackie – I spoke with Roxana on Sunday and told her how everyone is anxious for the tutorial. She did mention that she got her husband to cut out the three shapes for the backdrop. When she got to the party location, she put the three pieces together with sticky back Velcro. Apparently, it held up well enough for her to sell the backdrop to someone, but I’m not sure what material she made it out of. Hope those nuggets help in the meantime!
Hi, any chance I could get contact information for whoever made the backdrop?
Hi Heidi –
If you look at the bottom of the post, under the header KEEP UP WITH ROXANA, you’ll see her social media links. I’d try either Instagram or Twitter direct message. Good luck!
Hello! I was wondering (along with the other ladies here) if there is a tutorial out yet? I would love to make this & I’m having a bit of a tough time trying to figure out what it’s actually made of. A lady prior said she is using foam boards & I thought the same thing but I’m not sure how it would hold up. I also checked out thin ply wood but that may be a bit flimsy. Anyway, just wondering! 🙂
Hi Bianka – I have asked Roxanna again for the tutorial — I’m as curious to see it as you all are! I did hear from another party planning friend that foam insulation boards are good for making party backdrops, so I’m going to try that myself. I know Roxanna used velcro tape to hold the boards together. It seems to me that as long as you transport everything carefully, this would be a light-weight way to go and you’d avoid the warp that can happen with plywood. Good luck!
Jennifer,
Thank you much for your response. I made it! I don’t think it was as big as Roxanne’s but it worked!
Originally was going to use plywood but decided it would be too heavy. I used four 5′ foam boards (one black for middle section; two white for wings; forth for middle gold frame which I glued on to avoid masking.
Had husband do the math & cut, and happy to share his notes so anyone can use to scale to the size they want.
Basic Steps: cut foam boards, spray paint (black glossy for middle, gold & gold glitter for wings & middle frame, glue ribbon (I used tacky glue that dries clear), assemble (Velcro didn’t hold great bc of spray paint so I duck taped it at the event which was fine).
I was able to lean it against a wall at the event, but if I couldn’t I bought two cinder blocks (to use like bookends) and was going to drap the front one with black fabric. I also used floor up lighting to illuminate it.
Happy to share my husband’s math notes & pix but not sure how through this site.
Jennifer & Roxanne – Thank you again for the idea and the advise.
Jackie
Jackie – That is so awesome! Go you! If you have photo of the final product (the process would be a bonus) I’d love to share them! Just use my contact form to get in touch. Thanks!
I’m interested to know if you ever got a chance to share Jackie’s pictures and notes on her process.
Hi Katie – Sadly, Jackie didn’t send pics or her process – sorry!
Where do you get the 5′ foam boards? Thanks.
Hi – This actually was a guest party, but I’d recommend a DIY home store like Lowe’s. Insulation boards can work well. Good luck!
Please can you share the dimensions. I have a gatsby party in one week and love the idea of this backdrop for the cake to stand in front of
My bad. I’ll dig them up and upload later this week. If you live in the Bay Area, you can have it. It’s still sitting in my garage.
Thank you, unfortunately I don’t live in the area. I was asked to create this display last minute for next weekend so I went ahead and worked off of your post with a summary of what you did. I think I got this!!
Thanks again!
Hello Jackie!
I would love to see pictures to see how your board came out. I am in the process of deciding how to create mine. Can i give you my email?
Thank you!
Tiffany
Hi Jackie, where do you live in the bay area? I am doing a party for our local high School Grad night and this would be perfect. Do you still have it?
how did you get gold on the cake pops? also what are the flowers made of? my friend is graduating with her masters and i would love to make them for her party. thanks
Do you still have the back ground board? I live near Long beach 🙂
I’m in San Rafael. If you need this weekend, I need to get it out of school storage before 5pm tonight.
Hi Jackie, did you give away the Gatsby Dessert BackDrop yet? I live in Sacramento and I am willing to purchase and pick up.
Hello Jackie please post a pic of your backdrop or email it to me(alvarezmm4@yahoo.com) I’d like to see it. I like to make one for my sons 21st Gastby Bash.
Are those chains in the middle of the backdrop?
Hi – Roxana made the backdrop; I did not. But I don’t think it’s chains. I think it’s more like sequins and/or rhinestones that you purchase by the yard in the fabric department. Hope that helps, Jennifer
Did the tutorial ever get completed for the backdrop ,would love to have it
Hi Joan – No, I wish! Roxana never did get around to making a tutorial.
