I promised to share another small, socially distanced birthday party with you. This is what we did for my mom’s birthday back at the end of April. It couldn’t have been simpler — or shorter — but it kept us safe while squeezing in a little celebration.
It all started with the cake. Mom requested chocolate with vanilla frosting, so Baby B and I made that, using mom’s Real Crazy Cake recipe. We added a layer of diced strawberries inside the cake and decorated the top with a few more strawberries just for fun.
With the strawberry cake decision made, we started pulling any red and green party supplies that I had on hand:
- Strawberry fabric bunting from my shop to decorate our van, birthday parade-style
- Red tin tray left over from one of our charity bake sales
- Green polka dot wrapping paper to line the tray
- Red and white striped napkins
- Red forks and paper plates
- Woven basket left over from my twins’ horseback riding party
- Red wrapping paper and white and green bows
I didn’t trust the bunting to survive highway speeds so we added it to the van after we arrived at mom’s.
We asked mom to meet us on her front porch. With gloves and masks, we handed her the “birthday party on a tray” then backed up 6 feet and sang “Happy Birthday.” (Of course, her birthday gifts included some extra masks.)
How are you celebrating these days? Any ideas for a party that lets you keep your distance?
