The closer our Night Owl Slumber Party gets, the more ideas I’m having for food. (Be a little afraid — I’m no food stylist, but I always like to try new things.) Here’s how to make owl cupcakes. If I can do this, anyone can.
Owl Cupcake Supplies
- Cupcakes with frosting color of your choice
- White candy melts
- Candy corn
- Chocolate chips
- Baker’s chocolate
- Toothpicks
- Spoon
- Ziplock baggie (sandwich size)
Owl Cupcake Instructions
1 – Melt your baker’s chocolate according to package directions. I melted mine in the microwave on power 3 at 30 second intervals, stirring in between.
2 – This is how you make your beak. Insert a sturdy toothpick into the bottom of your candy corn. Just gently twist and push in the toothpick, but don’t push too far or your candy corn will crack.
3 – I tried just dipping the candy corn into the melted chocolate, but that created too thick of a chocolate coating. So instead, get a spoonful of chocolate and gently lay one side of your candy corn into the chocolate. Slowly turn over the candy corn in the chocolate to coat the other side.
4 – You need to allow at least an hour for the chocolate to dry on the candy corn. I propped mine up in an egg cup, but if you have a styrofoam block, that would work even better.
5 – Take two of the white candy melts and put them in the cupcakes upside down to make the owl eyes. The flat side should be facing up.
6 – Spoon some of the melted chocolate into a sandwich-sized Ziplock baggie. Snip off the tiniest corner tip.
7 – Place a tiny dot of chocolate on the back of a chocolate chip and place it on the candy melt. Hope you can see this — chocolate on chocolate is hard to photograph! These are your pupils.
8 – When your chocolate beaks are completely dry, wiggle each beak off its toothpick and place it between the eyes.
If you have a steadier hand then I do, take your baggie of melted chocolate and make a W pattern for wings on either side of your cupcake. I just couldn’t get this looking good, given the surface of the frosting, but maybe you will have better luck.
What do you think? Owl-y enough or kind of Big Bird-y? For my first try, I’m declaring them owl-y. 🙂
I definitely see owls – and it’s awesome how easy these are to make! : )
Thank you, Heather!
Those are adorable!!
Thanks so much, Alison! They were fun to make.
