I made a couple fun — and easy! — party decorations for my Let’s Go Fly a Kite Party, and I thought I’d share how to make kite party decor with you. You can easily make these kites and clouds. I used a die cutting machine for some the clouds and kites but you can totally freehand cut these paper decorations.

How to Make Kite Backdrop
Here’s a look at the finished kite backdrop:

Supplies:
- 12″ x 12″ scrapbooking paper
- Washi tape
- Scotch tape
- Pop-up glue dots
- Clear packing tape
- Chennile yarn
- Scissors and/or die cutting machine
Instructions:
1 – Cut four triangles from the scrapbooking paper. Two will be right triangles (there is one 90 degree angle). The bottom two also are right triangles, but two sides are elongated. I’d suggest making a little sketch and test cuts on scrap paper before cutting from your good paper.
If you work from a designed stack of paper, you’ll know that the patterns/colors will complement each other.

2 – For a kite that will go on your backdrop, your kite only needs one side. But, if you’re making a kite that can be seen from two sides, you need to make a back side to your kit. That means you’ll need 8 triangles instead of 4.

Here’s how the kite looked in my chandelier. It was supposed to have the look of a kite caught in a tree.

3 – Tape the triangles together front and back with scotch tape.

4 – Cover the front seams of the triangle with solid color washi tape. This is meant to look like the frame of the kite. (If you’re making a two-sided kite, also cover the back seams in washi tape.) Cut the ends of the washi tape into a point, following the angle of the kite.

5 – Cut the chenille yarn to form the kite’s tail. Attach one end of the tail to the bottom of the kite with clear packing tape. Attach the tail to your backdrop at a few points with pop-up glue dots.
6 – Cut the kit bows (basically a bow tie shape) and attach to the tail with more pop-up glue dots.

How to Make Hanging Clouds
These clouds are so simple to make. Here’s what the finished clouds looked like hanging from my chandelier.

Supplies
- White cardstock paper
- White twine
- Scissors
- Clear packing tape
- Power Glue Stick
Instructions
1 – Cut cloud shapes that are about 6 inches wide. You need two duplicates of each shape, so you may want to hold two pieces of paper together when you cut each cloud.

2 – Cut 8-inch lengths of twine.

3 – Make a loop with each piece of twine and tape the two ends to one cloud.
4 – Use Power Glue Stick to glue the matching cloud to the cloud with the twine. Press and smooth the two clouds together.

5 – Hang each twine loop over the arms of your chandelier.

How to Make Kite Plates
These kite plates were my favorites and the inspiration for the entire party. Here’s how they looked on our party table.

Supplies:
- Pickytarian diamond-shaped paper plates
- Thin washi tape
- Chenille yarn
- Kite ties cut from scrapbooking paper
- Scissors
- Pop-up glue dots
- Clear packing tape

Instructions:
1 – Create the kite frame by applying thin washi tape in a cross on your plate. This should create the illusion of four triangles.

Leave enough washi tape on each side to wrap to the back of the plate.

2 – Cut chenille yarn to your desired length. Tape to the bottom of the long point of the plate with clear packing tape.

3 – Apply three scrapbooking paper bows to the tail with glue dots.

How to Make Sunshine Forks
I love adding a little embellishment to my party utensils. For the kite party, I used sun and clouds as secondary decor, so adding sunshine buttons to my forks was a fun touch. Here’s how the looked at the party.

Supplies:
- Pickytarian forks
- Sunshine buttons from Amazon
- E6000 Glue from Amazon
- Wire cutters

Instructions:
1 – Snip the shank off your buttons.

2 – Put a dot of 3600 Glue on the back of a button and press the button to your fork.

I hope these kite party tutorials help you style your kite party. Ask any questions in comments and I’ll try my best to answer!
